Romain Rolland (1866-1944) was a French novelist, dramatist and Nobel laureate (1915), a committed pacifist best known for the ten-volume Jean-Christophe. Born in Clamecy, he wrote Pierre and Luce during the First World War as a protest against its slaughter.
