Finding ancestors at Clunes Booktown

In March 2019 the goldfields town of Clunes, north of Ballarat, filled with booksellers for the Clunes Booktown Festival.

Skomlin took History of Australian Bushrangers, George E. Boxall's account of colonial outlawry from first settlement to the death of Ned Kelly, with Kelly's Jerilderie Letter in full. This edition adds an index of every person and place in the book.

Visitors picked it up, turned to the back and went looking for their own surnames. Several found an ancestor there, and took the book home.

Launching The Secret Child in Los Angeles

Skomlin launched The Secret Child at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books in April 2018, on the University of Southern California campus.

Jean-Michel Olivier's L'Enfant secret won the Prix Dentan in Switzerland. It follows a narrator through the secrets of two families, one in the villages of Vaud and one in Trieste, where his grandfather's camera helped make Mussolini into Il Duce.

Clorinda Donato, who wrote the introduction, is Professor of French and Italian at California State University, Long Beach. The translator, Laurence Moscato, flew in from New York for the launch.

Skomlin at the Polish Festival, Melbourne

In September 2017 Skomlin took its Polish list to the Polish Festival in Melbourne: Kraszewski's Saxon court novels Countess Cosel and Count Brühl, Reymont's The Comedienne, and Klementyna Tańska Hoffmanowa's The Journal of Countess Françoise Krasinska.

For a press named after a village in central Poland, it was a natural place to be: among readers who knew these authors in Polish, meeting them in English.
